About the Event:

On Saturday, June 20, the New York City AIDS Memorial community gathered under a beautiful, sunlit sky to celebrate the opening of its newest public art commission, Oscar Tuazon’s Eternal Flame for Scott Burton. The afternoon brought together a wonderful crowd of supporters, neighbors, and art enthusiasts who enjoyed an exclusive first look at the completed sculpture while reflecting on its deep civic and historical significance.

The dedication ceremony was anchored by remarks from a distinguished lineup of voices who helped bring this monumental project to life. Dave Harper, Executive Director of the New York City AIDS Memorial, joined Jonathan Kuhn from NYC Parks and Sergio Pardo Lopez of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art program to share their perspectives on the collaboration. The artist, Oscar Tuazon, also spoke to the crowd, offering insight into the creative vision behind the piece and its tribute to Burton's enduring legacy.

The Memorial extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined in marking this special milestone on such a memorable day. The sculpture is now officially open to the public, offering a welcoming space for visitors to gather, reflect, and experience the artwork in person.
